OLE at JALT 2014: Coordinator’s Introduction

As one of the smaller SIGs in JALT, OLE has been able to put up an impressive program at JALT 2014 in Tsukuba with 21 presentations by 24 presenters. Most speakers made their presentations and in some cases even additional material available for this internet presence. We are especially grateful to Ambassador Zorko and Mr. Frei for the Embassy of Switzerland who provided us with more detailed information even after their presentations. A big thank you from all of OLE. Everything is here offered for your use for educational and research purposes. Please also inform your colleagues and anyone interested in other language education in Japan and beyond of this resource.

At the conference, we started with well attended presentations by Slovenian Ambassador Zorko and Mr. Frei for the Swiss embassy. This was followed by workshops and individual presentations, including the first ever in Malay at JALT, and the obligatory Annual General Meeting, this time with a higher number of members and interested (not-yet-members) present than ever before. New officers were elected (see OLE NL 72 for a full report), and this year OLE has three officers at large so it can fulfill its committee participation obligations.

OLE-related presentations continued all day Saturday and on early afternoon and evening on Sunday, and this even without French and Chinese workshops, for which we were unfortunately not able to gather enough presenters.

Although OLE at JALT 2014 can be considered a great success, those interested in OLE will soon be busy again:

OLE will participate in PanSIG 2015. OLE will also hold its 4th OLE-SIG conference, tentatively scheduled for October 3 & 4 at Chukyo University in Nagoya. And this will be followed by JALT 2015 at Granship Shizuoka. As OLE presenters are active in their own language teachers associations as well, they will have a very busy year in front of them.

We hope OLE’s activities in 2014 have been rewarding for you academically as well as on all practical aspects. Please inform us if we have left anything out or if there is anything you would like us to do for you. We also hope 2015 will be an even better year and we will strive to make this year as successful for you and OLE as possible.

Your OLE coordinator for 2014/5

Rudolf Reinelt
